UPDATE AFTER MEETING
A meeting has now taken place to discuss the way forward to address speeding issues through our village. The next step is to complete a ‘Pledge Form’ which requires 20% of the villagers to give their support. Subject to gaining this support, we need at least 8 people to attend a ‘Speed Watch Training Session’, which will take place in the Village Hall.
We currently have 4 people committed to help, so we are looking for another 4 volunteers at least to come forward before we can move forward. Our initial objectives are:
- Reduce the speed limit to 20 mph
- Install speed awareness signs
- Install village approach gates. This is basically a white fence containing a village sign and speed limit. Experience indicates that this is one of the most effective ways of controlling speed traffic.
Further discussions will take place at the next Parish Meeting to be held on Wednesday 19th December 2018.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Initial investigations revealed there are various measures that can be taken. e.g. speed bumps, speed cameras, speed reductions to 20mph, road narrowing at entrances to village, road markings and village entry gates, which basically is white fencing with the speed signs displayed on it.
I have written to the Highways Authority highlighting our concerns and asking for advice. They have in turn replied suggesting the initial action is a speed survey. I have arranged a meeting on 21st of November to discuss this with the sub-committee because we need to understand what benefits we can obtain relative to the work that we may have to carry out.
One final point to all residents is that I think we should lead by example. I have seen on numerous occasions when walking through the village, residents leaving their homes and driving in excess of 30 mph. If we can’t obey the speed limit, how can we expect other passing traffic to do so.
